2024 STAC Cross Country Championships Recap – Showcasing Elite Boys & Girls Performances

The Southern Tier Athletic Conference (STAC) Cross Country Championships took place on October 26, 2024, at Fortin Park in Oneonta, New York, bringing together top cross-country teams and athletes from across the Southern Tier. Varsity, Junior Varsity (JV), and Modified (middle school) divisions for both boys and girls raced with exceptional talent, grit, and endurance. Varsity Girls

In the Varsity Girls race, Ithaca claimed the team title with an impressive 40 points and a combined time of 1:43:06.70. Tsadia Bercuvitz (10th grade) led Ithaca’s strong performance, winning the individual title with a time of 17:52.40. Corning finished a close second with 43 points, led by Olivia Martinec (11th grade), who secured third overall. Vestal rounded out the top three teams, scoring 90 points, with a standout performance by Hellen Zhang (9th grade), who placed 7th individually.

Varsity Boys

On the boys’ side, Ithaca dominated with a team score of 27 and an average time of 16:40.7. Senior Riley Hubisz led Ithaca’s efforts, winning the race in 16:12.6. Corning took second with a team score of 45, spearheaded by Sebastian Boutwell, who placed third overall. Oneonta secured third place with a score of 90, thanks in part to Keyon Ziaie's 8th-place finish.


Junior Varsity Girls

Corning’s JV Girls team showed remarkable depth, achieving a perfect score of 15 and a total time of 2:00:40.80. Layla Byzitter (9th grade) led the team with a winning time of 23:23.10. Vestal placed second with 60 points, led by Isabella Torres (10th grade), who finished 6th, while Ithaca took third with 63 points, highlighted by Madeline Lewis (9th grade), who placed 9th.

Junior Varsity Boys

In the JV Boys race, Vestal emerged victorious with 23 points and an average time of 18:59.2, with Gideon Martin (10th grade) leading his team, finishing second in 18:31.2. Jeremiah Lynch from Ithaca claimed the individual title with a time of 18:28.4, helping Ithaca secure second place overall. Owego Free Academy took third, showcasing promising talent in their young roster.


Modified Girls

The Modified Girls division showcased Corning’s up-and-coming athletes, who captured the top spot with a team score of 35. Abigail Wagner (8th grade) led Corning, finishing second with a time of 10:57. Ithaca followed closely in second with 39 points, led by race winner Mattea Dauria (8th grade) in 10:37. Horseheads took third place, led by Hannah Sydlansky (8th grade), who finished 6th.

Modified Boys

The Modified Boys race was a showcase of Corning’s future talent, as the team achieved a perfect score of 15. Keith Huff (8th grade) led the team with a winning time of 9:50.3, followed by teammates Andrew Miller and Elijah Sonner. Vestal came in second with a team score of 53, and Ithaca rounded out the top three with David Yonker placing 7th.
